Hangleton Primary School pupil admission numbers Consultation

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to abandon its proposals to permanently reduce Hangleton Primary School pupil admission numbers

We would like to take a moment to express the impact the proposed changes would have on our School and the wider community. We have the best team of teachers who provide an excellent education for all our children.

Since the merger of Hangleton Infant School and Hangleton Junior School - the school has gone from strength to strength. In 2018 the school was graded Good with Outstanding Leadership and the academic results have risen year on year.
We are concerned that the council are not looking strategically at the spare places across the city - and not reducing schools that have historic low numbers, but looking to reduce Hangleton Primary, that over the past five years has had high numbers of first preferences. We had agreed to reduce our numbers, for one year only, to work with the council. However, within three months, they have initiated a consultation to permanently reduce the numbers. We believe that if the numbers are reduced, parents would be turned away from a school of their choice.

The consultation itself is unfair - as it is being held during Purdah (election time) and a school holiday - so not allowing the school the time and freedoms to openly raise concerns.

Hangleton Primary balances its budget and is not 'in the red', it has forecast itself to remain that way for the next few years. This means its staff can concentrate on providing high quality education.

Staff jobs would be lost. The school has worked hard to merge the two previous schools and not to have any redundancies during the merger process. however, a reduction in numbers would clearly lead to redundancies in the future.

Hangleton works in a Federation with Benfield Primary and together they support a number of other schools and run the Sussex Coast Teaching School. Reducing the numbers at Hangleton, would clearly have an impact on this work.
