Report of the Director of Environment (copy attached).

Additional documents:

Decision:

(1)       That the Cabinet Member for Environment  approves the allocation of the £5.79 million  2009/10 Local Transport Plan settlement to specific Integrated Transport and Maintenance schemes as set out in Appendix A of the report.

(2)       That the Cabinet Member for Environment approves the allocation of the Road Safety Grant of £476,000 to the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership to continue the important funding of casualty reduction measures in the area.

Minutes:

128.1         The Cabinet Member considered a report from the Director of Environment concerning approval of the allocation of the 2009/10 Local Transport Plan (LTP) funding to specific works areas and individual schemes within them (for copy see minute book).

128.2         The Cabinet Member explained that many of the schemes identified in the report would make a big difference to people in the city and that the council was working with many different partners to ensure that the benefits of the funding could be maximised and achieve greater value for money. He emphasised that the maintenance of the city’s transport network would remain a priority given the high level of investment allocated for this.

128.3         Councillor Mitchell stated that while she would have liked to have seen more environmental and urban enhancements proposed, she noted that there were plans for scoping and designing future schemes. She requested that work be carried out on the surface of Marine Parade as it had become dangerous.

128.4         Councillor Mitchell regretted the cuts made to the LTP budget, but was pleased that the Travel Behaviour Change programme had been retained and looked forward to the completion of the North Street scheme.

128.5         In response to queries from Councillor Davey the Assistant Director for Sustainable Transport explained that on review of LTP progress, consideration would be given to the status of Valley Gardens.

128.6         RESOLVED - That having considered the information and the reasons set out in the report, the Cabinet Member accepted the following recommendations:

(1)       That the allocation of the £5.79 million  2009/10 Local Transport Plan settlement to specific Integrated Transport and Maintenance schemes as set out in Appendix A of the report be approved.

(2)       That the allocation of the Road Safety Grant of £476,000 to the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership to continue the important funding of casualty reduction measures in the area be approved.
